This 'fallen angel' video turned out to be part of a Diesel campaign.

I never thought that video was real to begin with, but I think it's creepy that it turned out to not be a stand-alone work of creativity created by an individual, but a vessel for advertising, courtesy of the same company that gave you that "Stupid" campaign. Nice.

I feel like shit like this may have the unintended consequence of creating a culture of persistent doubt with everything that passes through one's windscreen. Is this healthy? I know it's healthy to take everything one sees with a grain of salt, but I think there's vigilance, and then there's neurosis. So what next, then, if everything's fake?

And so then, what's the ultimate point of filming anything amazing? Do you want to prove that what you saw was real?

What if that were no longer possible? Would you film it anyway?

And who would you show this film to?

Who would you trust with your feelings?

See? She's flipping you off.

I read an interesting post in Dr. Dean Radin's blog today. It was in response to an article by Martin A. Schwartz, entitled "The importance of stupidity in scientific research", and though it pertained to science, I wondered how it might be applied to other disciplines, specifically music. Here is a piece of it:

"Non-scientists may not realize that most of the time in scientific research, especially research at the edge of the known -- which is where all the excitement is -- that we really don't know what we're doing. Those few things we think we do understand are taught in elementary college textbooks."

The original article by Martin A. Schwartz, which is contained in the post, is neat. It's worth reading.

Would we all benefit from being a little more comfortable with what isn't known? Probably.

This reminds me, in an unrelated way, of how simple, yet thoroughly difficult the task of songwriting is - if stripped down, and expressed as a problem. First of all, I believe a songwriter's job is to deliver a feeling. Secondly, I believe this feeling will be effectively delivered with a storyline, conveyed through words, pitched tones, and rhythms.

Meanwhile I, personally, am ignorant of the complex memes that might help to focus the attentions of whoever might chance to hear this song, and in whatever circumstance they might chance to hear it, for better or for worse. So at the end of the day, I, as a songwriter, have only a feeling I want to convey - this is 'the problem' - and will use a story, 12-tone scale, and time broken up in to fractions expressed in regular intervals, within which to convey it.

If a scientist, in service to what remains unknown, should be comfortable with ignorance (what the author of the original article calls 'stupidity'), then should a musician do the same? This makes the job slightly different.

Oftentimes the job of music ends up being a show of force, acted out at the boundary of the musician's skill set - his knowledge of keys, styles, modalities, references, knowledge of software, interfaces, and his/her ability to command them. What if all he/she had were three things: words, simple rhythm, simple melody? What if he/she didn't even have control of the volume? Would these limitations neuter the meaning and value of the song, or would there still be a song?

Of course, it's all a trap - music is a craft as well as an art, and an art as well as a craft - but, if I keep along this line of reductionist thinking, I find there are probably other things a songwriter should be willing to lose. All those meta dialogues written in margins, secret meanings, secret symbols, things like these - things, which may often be confused with substance, are all fair game. What if they were all removed from my song? What if they all fell casualty to this higher level purpose: to convey the meaning, and convey it simply? Again, will I still have a song? Or will it now just be a track with words, a beat that's basically a tap track, and a melody that's a stub?

I think that's the pursuit of the unknown, as expressed in music. To play comfortably in what was printed in textbooks is to revel in keys, styles, modalities, capable engineering, references, and his/her ability to command them. To pursue the unknown is to maybe even not fully understand your own feelings before writing the song, and to tackle it dry: just story, simple rhythm, and simple melody.

But I guess it's pointless to compare music to parapsychology - apples and oranges. Like I said: it's a trap. And as comparisons go, it basically fails, but you have to admit, it would be cool if I could move a wine glass with this guitar. Well I guess that wouldn't be hard: I could just throw the damn thing at it.

Adult Concepts: This Man is Insane

It's a very adult thing, to realize that it is possible to be both right and wrong at the same time. Perfectly symmetrical, and un-defeatable linear logic is something I associate with a young mind.

Also, I think it's fair to say that sometimes, it is possible to do everything right and still fail. This is also a very adult, and difficult concept to grasp for a young mind. Disappointment is an adult flavor. But it's also not the final flavor. Some adults never grasp this. There is no shortage of things to taste, that's for sure.

I did not believe a proper segue is required in this case, any more than, say, Risperdal may be required for this man. He seems fine to me. He seems possessed of a certain knowledge. He seems righteously possessed. I wouldn't try to fix him. He doesn't seem to be needing it.

Mind you I do not believe this man actually speaks those languages. Not because I believe this man is lying to me, but because I have no evidence that there are even languages spoken on those planets. I have no evidence, right now, that "Kruger" is even a planet. Also, I have no evidence that, if there were languages spoken on those planets, this man would know about them. Why would he?

Also, to me, this man seems fucking insane. The noises coming out of his mouth sound like a cross between a tape scrub, a little animal being press-ganged into a live-action Disney movie, and a man trying to sound like a man speaking a language that doesn't exist. Or maybe a Korg KAOSS Pad, butt-fucked by Gomer Pyle on a dust bender. I've heard these noises before, and they come from broken things.

But you know, in a lot of ways this is video is the greatest thing I've ever watched in my life. I can't make anything this cool. I doubt I will ever make anything this cool. I wish I can one day make something this cool. You see, I was feeling really shitty before I saw this on MysteriousUniverse.org, and now I know...I know this man is insane.

None of this - security-fetish culture - makes any sense to me unless I assume that we (travelers, citizens, people) are the actual target of all this hostility, not that invisible social group they are obstensively filtering for, The Terrorists.

That may mean that the TSA checkpoint at your local airport exists not for your safety, but as a type of humiliating interrogation, whose purpose is to render out dangerous, undesirable elements: you.

St. Patrick's day is here a few days early. I suppose this is because city endorsement of drinking in the streets on a Saturday is far less of a political minefield than city endorsement of drinking on the streets on a Wednesday.

Do they do this for Bastille Day? I forget.

It was a working holiday for me. The mastering of all the individual tracks of Business 80's first album had just been completed as of last night, and so I spent the latter half of the day in my apartment, putting the finishing touches on the completed files, as a huge St. Patrick's Day party cranked on and on, in front of The Capital, a few unobstructed blocks from my house.

LAX to SFO: Adventures in Institutionalized Paranoia

I spent the weekend in Los Angeles, where I ran into Stephen Ruiz of Architects and Heroes. On Friday night, a bunch of us went to a flamenco bar called El Cid, over in Silverlake, where we saw (a)pendics.Shuffle. It was a good show.

The weather was good, save for the fantastic torrential rain on Saturday, which - thankfully - came down, for the most part, while we were in the MOCA.

Our return flight to San Francisco was Sunday, and we got to Los Angeles Int'l an hour early, only to find endless lines of Southwest passengers spilling out onto the sidewalk like cattle.

There was a lot of people. Having already filled the maze-like security checkpoint line inside with traveler's bodies and luggage, the TSA had new arrivals line up in the passenger loading/unloading area, outside.

What could possibly be causing this massive buildup of people? It wasn't a holiday weekend. I wasn't sure what made this Sunday special.

I thought this as we, along with a number of other passengers, were led upstairs to a plain white office room, to what we assumed was an additional security checkpoint. To what we hoped was only an additional security checkpoint.

I began to grow concerned.

Was this the result of the 'increased security measures' following the attempted Amsterdam/Detroit bombing?

That line upstairs in that little room did not move for several minutes. What were they doing to people over there, around that corner, and beyond what we can see with our eyes? Were they frisking people? Strip searching them? Questioning them? Shining lights in their faces?

Edgy, angry passengers fidgeted and checked the time. I was nervous. I'm sure we were not the only ones whose flights were scheduled to depart in a matter of minutes, so I knew other people were thinking the same thing. Why were they doing this to us? And why just this group?

It turns out we were not special. Not at all.

I got to the front of the line only to realize the true reason for the delay: they were running the conveyer belts on the x-ray machines extra-slowly. This is so that packages - carry-ons, shopping bags, shoes, computers, consumer technology - get more time in that x-ray machine, and were examined more thoroughly. And they were likely doing this downstairs, too, which accounts for the massive delay.

Did something new happen to trigger this? Or was it, again, the result of the attempted Amsterdam/Detroit bombing? Most packages got looked at more than twice. Some got looked at using two different monitor magnifications. Sometimes the TSA technician behind the monitor looked at the stuff at two different color contrasts. It was like he was playing some sort of puzzle game - like "Where's Waldo", but with our luggage. But what were they looking for? And why did they seem so certain they would find it?

And just what were they hoping to find?

Were they hoping to find box cutters? Home-made plastic explosive? Guns? Knives? Jihadist screeds, hurriedly scrawled in Arabic, and photocopied at Kinkos? Drugs? Secrets? Vibrators?

By slowing the conveyor belts down to a near halt, it's as if they believed that looking even closer and more carefully at everybody's personal items than they normally do will make us all feel that much safer.

Well, maybe they're on the right track. But is safety really a feeling? I wondered what would happen if they had special security microscopes, and were able to examine our personal belongings at a quantum level. Maybe they'd see, swimming around in our electrons, a different truth than what's available to the naked eye. And maybe it will be in this way that this special security microscope would be able to separate the bad guys from the good guys, and thus ensure that we all enjoy quantum levels of ultra-security whenever we traveled. Maybe.

Or maybe, if they turn up the tension on already nervous travelers to interrogation levels, they will detect from us a level of truth not normally available to them under standard security protocols. And eventually - and after much loss of civil liberties - the appropriate bad guys will crack under the strain, and the authorities will find their terrorists. And we good guys, we'll all be able to fly safe. And we'll have martial law to thank for that. And like ass-dents popping back into place on a couch, we can go back to the way we were and let it all hang out again. Like we were, before we were afraid.

Will either of these scenarios happen? Not likely.

Why? Because it's clear to me now that the TSA is mentally ill. It's as if their mission has changed into one big, demented experiment/game of Schrödinger's Jihadist: stare at something for long enough, and it will radicalize before your very eyes. Is this security? Or is this what they call "security theater"? Or is this just simply evidence of culture-wide pathological neurosis?

We are creatures of fear. Scared of people we can only imagine, scared of death, but most of all, scared of each other. We are the TSA, because of the simple fact that they are no different than us (TSA | Who We Are: "(we are) 50,000 security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nation's transportation systems so you and your family can travel safely. We look for bombs at checkpoints in airports, we inspect rail cars, we patrol subways with our law enforcement partners, and we work to make all modes of transportation safe"). They are people with jobs. They are our friends and neighbors. And they are also an expression of our tax dollars. They are us.

They are fucking crazy.

Eventually we boarded. No terrorists were found. But I now have solid, irrefutable proof that the TSA, as an organization, suffers from collective severe paranoid delusions.

And that means that we, as a culture, probably do, too.

Philip K. Dick would be proud.

This is a musical instrument we created Saturday night. It's an autoharp you play by hitting a piece of plywood with a shovel.

The attack generates two signals: one - an audio signal - transmitted through a pickup on the autoharp, and one - a MIDI signal - from a drum trigger attached to the plywood. The subsequent noise this creates is horrible.

You'd think I'd know, but honestly I'm not that bright.

Went to a funeral yesterday, dressed in my formals. With my Ray Ban Clubmaster glasses and olive suit I looked like Det. Jack Vincennes from L.A. Confidential, but in the dry, burning heat I perspired like Louie Anderson at Burning Man.

The reception was at a country club. I drank scotch and chain smoked cigarettes.

Later on that evening I went down to the Blue Lamp in Downtown Sacramento, where the rowdies were having an 'iPod Battle'. Not sure what this constituted. Better drink more.

Jon Droll was there. He was very, very drunk. I also became very, very drunk.

Jon ran around picking people up all night, like Bigfoot running around grabbing '20 something girls and hauling them off into the woods to eat. I ran up to him, and, thinking I was Wonder Woman, grabbed him and attempted to pick him up and haul him off into the woods. No dice: Jon is heavier than me. My 90-lb weakling body, my Clubmasters, my olive Donna Karan and Jon Droll went down on the pavement in front of the Blue Lamp. I swear at that moment I heard a popping, ripping, tearing noise (this is what pain sounds like), which I ignored, in the interest of physical comedy. And now I am Jerry Lewis, on the sidewalk in front of the Blue Lamp on Alhambra Street.

Next: pain. I think I fucked up my ankle. Thankfully, Nick (photog for Vicious) took pictures. This made me feel much better (thanks Nick). I dragged myself up from the sidewalk and fell back down again.

Who is responsible for this? Certainly not me.

There's only one person capable of this level of negligent stupidity, and with my last bit of energy I whisper my assailant's name: Rollo Tomasi.

My letter to SF Public Works:

"Additionally, sections of some business streets are swept seven days per week on both sides of the street between midnight and 6am. They include: (1) Embarcadero...(8) Van Ness/South Van Ness."

The street sweep truck was here MORE THAN THREE TIMES last night, starting at around 3:30 AM. Why? This is not the first night this occurs. This is, apparently, normal.

I wrote about this problem on Tuesday, June 24th. This time I am asking you: can you please get back to me with an explanation as to why this needs to occur at all before 6AM, as posted in YOUR schedule?

People in the Tenderloin neighborhood have the right to a good night's sleep. This is starting to seem like harrassment of some sort, and I will continue to view it as such until somebody from your office gets back to me proposing a solution.

Is it possible to be aware of a defining moment like this for a band as it’s happening? Were the eight people who saw the first Rolling Stones show aware of what was transpiring before them? Boy, 11, bites The Luxury Tax to fend off attack

(07-24) 15:36 PDT SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) --

An 11-year old boy is in Brazil's media spotlight after sinking his teeth into the neck of The Luxury Tax. Local newspapers reported on Thursday that Gabriel Almeida was playing in his uncle's backyard in the city of Belo Horizonte when The Luxury Tax lunged at him and bit him in the left arm.

Almeida grabbed The Luxury Tax by the neck and bit back — biting so hard that he lost a canine tooth.

Almeida tells the O Globo newspaper: "It is better to lose a tooth than one's life."

Stonemasons working nearby chased The Luxury Tax away before it could attack again.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper said the boy received four stitches at a local hospital while The Luxury Tax was taken to a pound and may be killed.

Photographs are the only way people can be sure you ever truly existed at that space and time. Look at Shakespeare: no photos. Now people think he's a pen name for someone else.

This is what happens when there is no data to back up your claim to existance: people erase you. And they don't do it maliciously. They just do it because they don't believe things are real until they can see pictures (itself a dangerous pretext for belief).
